Description

A pair of cottages located in the village of Newton St Cyres, dating to the late 17th or early 18th century. The cottages are constructed with plastered cob on rubble footings, featuring cob and brick stacks and a thatched roof, half-hipped at the north-west end. They form part of a row of cottages along the street, and are a long, low building situated on a raised pavement.

The cottages are two storeys high, with a portion of the first floor situated within the roofspace. The rear of the building contains stacks. A large, probable cob stack projects behind No. 1. Each cottage originally had two windows on each floor, though these are now 19th and 20th century casements of varying sizes and spacing. A door is located to the right of No. 1, and centrally in No. 2. The thatch eaves curve sharply over the first floor windows. The roof slopes upwards to the right, creating a concave curve where it joins the 20th century slate roof of the adjacent property, No. 3, despite a significant drop in pavement level from left to right. The cottages are included on the list for their group value.
