Description
Beckermet War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, located in Beckermet Cemetery at the junction of the A595 and B5345 in Beckermet, Cumbria. It is prominently positioned facing the road junction on a slightly raised mound. The memorial features a polished wheel-head cross with splayed arms atop a tapering shaft, which stands on a rough-hewn square plinth that has a polished face for inscriptions, resting on another rough-hewn square block below. The cross and plinth display inscriptions in incised and blacked lettering.
The inscription on the cross head reads "IN LASTING MEMORY," while the base of the shaft states "THE MEN OF ST JOHN’S PARISH AND BECKERMET VILLAGE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918" followed by names and the phrase "THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE ECCLUS.XLIV.14." On the back, there is a later inscription that reads "ALSO THOSE WHO FELL IN THE WORLD WAR 1939 – 1945" followed by names.
