Description

The Church of St Bridget is a Grade II* listed building located in Beckermet. It dates back to the medieval period with alterations made in the 17th century. The church is constructed of roughcast stone and features a slate roof, with some sections having ashlar dressings. It consists of a 2-bay nave and chancel, both topped with coped gables. The nave includes three-light wooden mullioned windows with ovolo-moulded mullions, and there is a small high window at the east end of the south wall. The plain west entrance has paired three-fielded panel doors, and a gabled bellcote houses two bells. Headstones are situated against the south wall.

Inside, the church has a barrel-vaulted ceiling and a double-chamfered chancel arch set into the wall. The interior features fielded panelled wainscoting and fixed benches. The 17th-century pulpit is adorned with fielded round-headed panels in architraves, fluted Doric half-columns, and an entablature with a pulvinated frieze. The altar rail is supported by slender columns on vase balusters, and the altar itself is a stone slab with a moulded edge. Additionally, there are George III arms and painted boards displaying the Lord's Prayer, the Ten Commandments, and the Creed. Notably, Anglo-Saxon cross bases located to the south are designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
