Description

North Kilworth War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was unveiled in 1920 and later altered following the Second World War. It is located on The Green at the south end of the High Street in North Kilworth, Leicestershire, and is prominently placed within an octagonal railed enclosure on the open lawns of the green.

The memorial features a floriated wheel head cross made of Weldon stone, which stands approximately 13 feet high on a tapering octagonal shaft. The shaft has a moulded collar and a four-sided foot with a relief-carved dedication at its base. This shaft is set upon an octagonal plinth made of Hopton Wood stone, which has recessed inscription panels, chamfered upper edges, and a moulded foot that rests on a Derbyshire stone base and concrete foundation. The inscriptions on the plinth are incised and infilled. Surrounding the memorial is octagonal paving and spiked railings with a gate.

The inscriptions include relief carving on the cross shaft and incised lettering around the plinth, which reads: (Cross shaft): THEIR/ NAME/ LIVETH/ FOR/ EVERMORE// (plinth): TO THE/ GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN MEMORY OF/ MEN OF THIS PARISH/ WHO FELL IN/ TWO WORLD WARS/ 1914 - 1919/ (NAMES)// (NAMES)// 1939 - 1945/ (NAMES)// ALSO/ IN THANKFUL/ APPRECIATION/ OF THE/ SERVICES OF/ THE MEN FROM/ THIS PARISH/ WHO SERVED/ THEIR KING AND COUNTRY// (NAMES).
