Description
Chevington War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921, with additions for the Second World War. It is located in the churchyard to the south of All Saints’ Church, which is a Grade I-listed building.
The memorial is made of Portland stone and features a wheel-head cross with cusped tracery in the inner segments of the wheel. This cross sits atop a tall, octagonal tapering shaft that has a moulded collar and ends in a square foot with chamfered stops. The shaft rises from a square plinth, which is chamfered along the top edges, and the entire structure rests on a two-stepped, square base. All lettering on the memorial is incised.
The main inscription is on the east face of the plinth and reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ REMEMBER BEFORE HIM/ THE HEROIC DEAD OF THIS PARISH/ 1914–1919/ GRANT THEM O LORD ETERNAL REST AND/ LET LIGHT PERPETUAL SHINE UPON THEM." The names of the 20 men who died are listed on the other three faces of the plinth.
Additionally, the east face of the upper step of the base includes another inscription that states: "ALSO THOSE WHO DIED IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR/ 1939 – 1945/ (3 NAMES)."
