Description
Old Lodge and Old Lodge Cottage is a farmhouse that has been divided into two cottages. It dates back to the mid-16th century, with alterations made in the 17th century and later. The building has a three-cell plan featuring both cross-passage and lobby entrances. It stands two storeys high with attics. The structure is timber-framed and plastered, topped with a plain tiled roof that includes a 16th or 17th-century axial chimney made of red brick, built in two stages. Additional rear and end chimneys of red brick were added in the 18th and 19th centuries.
The cottages have mid-20th century metal casements and a flush entrance door for each, located at the lobby and cross-passage entrances respectively. Some substantial 16th-century framing members are exposed, and there is a large axial chimney between the hall and parlour cells that has blocked open fireplaces. The attic floors feature ogee-moulded binding joists, likely inserted in the early 17th century. There are also two two-storey rear wings from the 17th or 18th century.
Historically, a hunting lodge was located on this site around 1550, used by Thomas Kitson of Hengrave Hall, and it is possible that this lodge is incorporated into the current building.
