Description
East Cowton War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921, with later additions for the Second World War. It is situated to the north of the Parish Church of All Saints, which is also a Grade II-listed building.
The memorial is made of rough-hewn stone and features a wheel-head cross that rises from a tapering, square plinth, resting on a single-step base. The south-east face of the cross-head has a smooth stone panel shaped like a wheel-head cross, adorned with an interlaced Celtic knot work design in the center. Below this, the lower half of the shaft contains another smooth panel with the inscription: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN HONOURED MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918." The names of the seven servicemen who died are listed on a panel on the south-east face of the plinth, with all inscriptions and names presented in raised, leaded lettering.
In front of the memorial plinth, on the south-east face, there is a wedge-shaped tablet made of polished stone that carries the dedication for the Second World War. This tablet is incised on the upper surface with the dates "1939 – 1945," followed by the names of the two servicemen who died.
