Description

Pepper Arden is a house that originally dates from the early 18th century, with a rear wing added around 1850 and side blocks with canted bays constructed around 1870. The 19th-century alterations may have been carried out by W.E. Nesfield. The building is made of red brick with cement rendering and ashlar dressings, topped by a Welsh slate roof.

The central block has three storeys and seven bays. The windows are sashes set in plain surrounds with double keystones, while the second-floor windows feature single keystones. The central entrance is a half-glazed door with an overlight, situated within a Roman Doric porch that includes a frieze, cornice with mutules, and a blocking course. Above the door is a window with a segmental pediment. There are bands at the first and second floors, along with a stone cornice and a balustraded parapet adorned with ball-finials.

On either side of the central block are canted stone bays that rise two storeys, featuring quoins and sashes with double keystones. These bays also have a first-floor band, cornice, and parapet similar to the main block. To the left, there is a two-storey wing with two bays, also featuring quoins and tripartite windows with sashes in stone surrounds with double keystones, along with a first-floor band and parapet matching the main block. At the far left is a service block with a walled court in front, which has arched openings on a plinth, along with a frieze, cornice, and parapet that match the main block.

Inside, there is an open-well staircase with thin iron balusters. The two front rooms of the main block have 19th-century plaster ceilings.
