Description
The North Cowton War Memorial is a Grade II listed structure made of white marble, set on sandstone flags and surrounded by iron railings. The memorial features a tapering marble pillar topped with a crown, upon which rests a draped urn adorned with a carved wreath. The pillar is mounted on a square plinth that rises from a two-stepped base and stands approximately 3 meters high.
The inscriptions are crafted in lead lettering. The pillar bears a dedicatory inscription that reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND / IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF / THE FOLLOWING / WHO GALLANTLY DIED / IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914 – 1918." The names of the men from the parish who fell in the First World War are listed on the plinth below.
On the top step, there is an inscription that reads: "1939 – 1945 (NAME) / ERECTED BY THE PARISHIONERS OF / NORTH AND SOUTH COWTON."
The memorial is situated on a small area paved with flagstones and is enclosed by iron railings.
