Description
Shelford War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, with additions for the Second World War. It is located in a gravelled area and features a stone wheel-head cross that stands 4 meters tall. The cross is mounted on a tapering shaft, which in turn rests on a tapering plinth. The plinth has incised inscriptions on its north, west, and eastern faces and is supported by a three-stepped square base.
On the northern face of the plinth, there are 12 names of those who served in the First World War, inscribed in black letters in a single column. Below this, on the top step of the base, is the inscription: "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS THAT/ A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS."
The eastern face of the plinth bears the inscription: "ERECTED BY THE/ PARISHIONERS OF SHELFORD/ IN GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE/ AND HONOUR TO THE MEN OF/ THIS PARISH WHO FELL IN/ THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1919."
The western face of the plinth includes the years "1939 – 45" along with one name.
