Description
This milestone, dating from 1830, was created for the Carlisle-Brampton Turnpike. It is made of red sandstone and features cast iron plates. The stone is squared with a chamfered top and is set at an angle to the road, allowing for two faces visible to oncoming traffic. Each face has a cast plate: the one facing east is inscribed "TO CARLISLE 6 MILES" and the one facing west reads "TO BRAMPTON 3 MILES." The milestone has been whitewashed, with the lettering highlighted in black. It has been relocated from its original position on a short section of the by-passed road.
