Description
This milestone, dating from 1830, was created for the Carlisle-Brampton Turnpike Trust. It is made of sandstone and features a cast-iron plate. The stone is squared with a pyramidal top and is set at an angle to the road, providing two faces for oncoming traffic. Each face has a cast plate inscribed with "TO CARLISLE 8 MILES" and "TO BRAMPTON 1 MILE." The milestone is whitewashed, with the lettering highlighted in black.
