Description
Brackenfell is a house dating from 1938, with later alterations, designed in the Modern style by Leslie Martin and Sadie Speight for Alastair Morton. The construction is red brick cavity walls with local rough stone dressings, flat concrete lintels, and concrete roofs. It is two stories in height. The entrance facade features an off-centre doorway with a curved stone walled porte cochere covered by a concrete roof. A shallow, wide porch is present with a glass brick wall and an iron column; this continues to the right, covering three long windows supported by stone piers at both the front and side. To the left of the entrance is the kitchen window, with a projecting service wing beyond. Above the doorway and to the right are a circular window and a large raking studio window. The garden front has a projecting two-story section on the right with three windows, and an added projecting sun lounge to the right. Above these are rendered panels. To the left, a set-back nursery has two windows and an inserted door, with an open sleeping platform and metal railings above. Beyond the blank ground floor is the studio, topped by its unusual large window. The interior retains its original plan form, with original doors and fitted cupboards surviving throughout, particularly in the kitchen, bedrooms, and upstairs landing. The main reception room has an original stone fireplace, and the original wooden staircase, with an unusual balustrade, also remains intact.
