Description
This milestone, likely dating from 1758, was erected for the Carlisle-Newcastle Military Road. It is made of sandstone and features cast-iron plates. The stone is chamfered to create two faces for traffic direction. One face has a cast plate indicating "TO CARLISLE 9 MILES," while the other states "TO NEWCASTLE 47 MILES," both presented in four lines. The milestone has been whitewashed, with the lettering highlighted in black. There is a bench mark on top of the stone. In 1811, this milestone became part of the Carlisle-Temon Turnpike. It is clearly marked on Hodgskinson & Donald's map of Cumberland and Westmorland, which was surveyed in 1770.
