Description
This milestone, likely dating from 1758, was erected for the Carlisle-Newcastle Military Road. It is made of sandstone and features cast-iron plates. The stone is chamfered to create two faces for traffic direction. One face has a cast plate inscribed with "CARLISLE 7 MILES" in four lines, while the other face reads "TO NEWCASTLE 49 MILES," also in four lines. The milestone has been whitewashed, with the lettering highlighted in black. In 1811, the road was designated as the Carlisle-Temon Turnpike. Each milestone is clearly depicted on Hodgkinson and Donald's map of Cumberland and Westmorland, which was surveyed in 1770.
