Description
Ruleholme Bridge is a road bridge over the River Irthing, part of the Military Road from Newcastle to Carlisle. An inscription on the central internal splay parapet states, "This Bridge was built at the charge of the Government, Begun in 1753, Undertakers Wm. Lowden" (the rest of the inscription is covered by the road surface). The bridge is constructed of dressed red sandstone and features three arches with splayed cut-waters, one located in the river bed and the other on the river bank. The rounded arches are reinforced with 20th-century brick, and the cut-water extends upwards to form a splayed parapet. The bridge was by-passed in the 1970s.
