Description
This milestone, likely dating from 1758, is located on the Carlisle-Newcastle Military Road. Made of sandstone, it features cast-iron plates and has a chamfered design that provides two faces for traffic direction. One side displays the inscription "TO CARLISLE 6 MILES," while the other reads "TO NEWCASTLE 50 MILES," both arranged in four lines. The milestone has been whitewashed, with the lettering highlighted in black. In 1811, this route became known as the Carlisle-Temon Turnpike. The milestone is also marked on Hodgskinson & Donald's map of Cumberland and Westmorland, which was surveyed in 1770.
