Description

This is a milestone, likely dating from 1758, located on the Carlisle-Newcastle Military Road in Brampton, south of Gowanholes Wood. It is made of sandstone and features cast-iron plates. The stone is chamfered to create two faces for traffic direction. One face has a cast plate indicating "TO CARLISLE 12 MILES," while the other states "TO NEWCASTLE 44 MILES," both presented in four lines. The milestone has been whitewashed, with the lettering highlighted in black. In 1811, this road became known as the Carlisle-Temon Turnpike. Each milestone is clearly marked on Hodgskinson & Donald's map of Cumberland and Westmorland, which was surveyed in 1770.
