Description
This milestone, likely dating from 1758, is located on the north side of Low Row in Nether Denton along the A69. It was originally part of the Carlisle-Newcastle Military Road. Made of sandstone, it features cast-iron plates and has chamfered stone to create two faces for traffic direction. One face displays the inscription "TO CARLISLE 13 MILES," while the other reads "TO NEWCASTLE 43 MILES," both arranged in four lines. The milestone has been whitewashed, with the lettering highlighted in black. In 1811, this route became known as the Carlisle-Temon Turnpike. Each milestone is depicted on Hodgskinson & Donald's map of Cumberland and Westmorland, which was surveyed in 1770.
