Description
This milestone, located east of Low Row, was likely erected in 1758 for the Carlisle-Newcastle Military Road. It is made of sandstone and features cast-iron plates. The stone is chamfered to create two faces for traffic direction. One face has a cast plate that reads "TO CARLISLE 14 MILES," while the other reads "TO NEWCASTLE 42 MILES," both arranged in four lines. The milestone has been whitewashed, with the lettering highlighted in black. In 1811, it became part of the Carlisle-Temon Turnpike. This milestone is also depicted on Hodgskinson & Donald's map of Cumberland and Westmorland, which was surveyed in 1770.
