Description
This milestone, located north-west of Oldgrove, was likely erected in 1758 for the Carlisle-Newcastle Military Road. It is made of sandstone with cast-iron plates. The stone is chamfered to create two faces for traffic direction. One face features a cast plate that reads "TO CARLISLE 3 MILES," while the other reads "TO NEWCASTLE 53 MILES," both inscribed in four lines. The milestone has been whitewashed, with the lettering highlighted in black. In 1811, it became part of the Carlisle-Temon Turnpike. This milestone is clearly marked on Hodgskinson and Donald's map of Cumberland and Westmorland, which was surveyed in 1770.
