Description
Eden Grove is a house built in the early 19th century for Richard Carruthers. It features red sandstone ashlar and a graduated slate roof with lead hips, along with ashlar chimney stacks. The building has a basement and a single storey, consisting of three bays, with an additional wing of four bays, reflecting the style of a Regency villa.
The front of the house includes a stepped tetrastyle portico supported by Doric fluted columns, topped with a moulded entablature and a moulded pediment. The entrance is framed by tapering pilaster strips and is flanked by sash side lights, leading to a 20th-century door with a glazed fanlight. The channelled ashlar extends up to the string course level, with similar tapering pilaster strips around the window surrounds, which feature sashes with glazing bars. The wing has a hipped roof and sash windows with glazing bars.
In front of the house, there is a screen wall made of ashlar that includes two projecting entrances with rounded heads; one is blind while the other has a 20th-century wrought iron gate. This wall extends to enclose a small garden. Richard Carruthers was an artist who was advised to go to South America for his health, where he became wealthy before returning to build this house, where he died in 1876.
