Description
Milestone located to the west of the Stag Inn, likely dating from 1758, was erected for the Carlisle-Newcastle Military Road. It is made of sandstone and features cast-iron plates. The stone is chamfered to create two faces for traffic direction. One face has a cast plate indicating "TO CARLISLE 4 MILES," while the other states "TO NEWCASTLE 52 MILES," both presented in four lines. The milestone has been whitewashed, with the lettering highlighted in black. In 1811, this milestone became part of the Carlisle-Temon Turnpike. It is also clearly depicted on Hodgskinson and Donald's map of Cumberland Westmorland, which was surveyed in 1770.
