Description
The Church of St John is a church built in 1854 by R.H. Billings, completely replacing a medieval church on the same site. It is constructed from dressed red sandstone and features a graduated slate roof. The building includes a 2½ storey tower, a four-bay nave, and a single-bay chancel. The west tower has a moulded plinth course that continues around the entire building. The entrance features a pointed arch with a crocket open pediment and a trefoil tympanum, along with a string course and lancet windows with curvilinear tracery. The short spire has crocket edges and four lucarnes topped with a central pinnacle. There is a projecting stair tower on the south wall.
The nave contains pointed windows with two lights and curvilinear tracery heads, all featuring continuous drip moulding. The chancel has a steeply pitched roof on the north side to accommodate a vestry. Inside, the church retains its original pews with end doors, an oak carved pulpit, a carved oak lectern, and a Norman font from the original church, which has a square base, rounded stem, and a square bowl with chamfered edges. There is a rear gallery supported by cantilever arches, featuring an oak balustrade and handrail. The roof is supported by semicircular arched braces. The windows have squared leaded lights with cut or moulded glass heads and internal segmental rear arches with lacy tracery. Additionally, there are several white marble wall plaques. According to the Post Office Directory of Cumberland & Westmorland from 1858, some of the stone used for the new church was sourced from the Roman Wall.
