Description

Fern Lea Rondo Cottage comprises two cottages, originally three, built in 1740. They were initially estate cottages serving Rickerby House and are now part of Eden School. The building is constructed of brick in an English garden wall bond, with a slate roof and brick chimney stacks. It has one and a half storeys and 3 to 5 bays. Three gabled porches are present, one being filled in. A projecting, full-height tray window with a gabled roof sits on the left-hand side. There are two corbelled-out gabled dormer windows above. Windows have chamfered stone surrounds and contain 20th-century steel-framed casements; 20th-century doors are also present. Two original chimney stacks remain, alongside one replacement. A full-length upper storey extension to the rear was added in the 20th century. The cottages are similar in style to other estate cottages at Rickerby. A stone initialled H.B. is set into the front wall.
