Description

Ivy Cottage is a cottage dated 1725, located in Stanwix, near Rickerby. The initials R.B.M. appear on the lintel. It is constructed of English garden wall bond brickwork with stone dressings and a slate roof, featuring brick chimney stacks. The cottage is two storeys high and comprises four bays. Architectural details include a stone chamfered plinth course, quoins, and a cornice. A moulded stone surround frames the 20th-century entrance door. The windows are 20th-century steel casements set within 19th-century openings. The mullions have been removed, and drip moulds remain. Window surrounds were likely inserted by George Head when he converted the cottage into a girls' school around 1835.
