Description
The Old Schoolhouse is a storehouse that was formerly a school, built in 1835 for George Head Head. It features walls made of calciferous sandstone ashlar and has a graduated slate roof. The building is single storey and consists of five bays. The west gable includes a gabled entrance porch with a slate roof, which has a chamfered entrance surround with a hood-mould and two four-panel doors. Above the doors, there is a stone panel with raised lettering that reads "BOYS SCHOOL" along with the date. The porch is flanked by two square-headed lancet windows, and above the porch, there is a corbelled square bellcote with louvred vents and a finial. The north face of the building has a chamfered plinth course and cross-mullioned diamond leaded casements with hood-moulds, as well as coped gables with pronounced kneelers. The external condition of the building is unaltered, but there are no remaining internal features. Mr. Head built this school at his own expense and paid the schoolmaster, who served for over 40 years. After the schoolmaster's death, the pupils were transferred to Stanwix School.
