Description

Eden Cottage, Tower Cottage, Lawn Cottage, Barn View, and East View are a row of five cottages, likely built in the late 18th century, similar in style to The Cottage, which is dated 1732 and located nearby. These cottages were formerly estate cottages for Rickerby House, which is now Eden School. They feature English garden wall bond brickwork with stone dressings and have graduated slate roofs along with brick chimney stacks. Each cottage is one and a half storeys tall and consists of two bays.

There are three porches: two made of brick and one made of wood, with one entrance showcasing a pointed brick arch. The windows are designed with chamfered 2-3 light mullions, although some have been altered to include 20th-century wooden casements with square and diamond leaded panes. The cottages also have corbelled-out gable dormers, with one dormer dating from the 20th century. Architectural details include moulded brick modillions, shaped and crow-stepped gables, and tall double hexagonal chimney stacks resting on square bases. A notable feature on the northwest side is a two-storey square brick tower that has slit openings and a corbelled-out, castellated brick parapet. The design of these cottages is also reminiscent of estate cottages found in Linstock, which date back to 1740.
