Description
Eden School, originally a house, was likely built around 1835 for George Head Head. The building features calciferous sandstone ashlar walls and a slate roof with lead hips, along with ashlar chimney stacks. It is two storeys high with five bays on the entrance facade. The entrance is highlighted by a tetrastyle porch supported by Greek Doric columns, a moulded entablature, and a dentilled cornice. The windows have moulded surrounds and a projecting hood with scrolled brackets over the ground floor windows and above the entrance. The tripartite entrance has a squared surround with a six-panel door flanked by sidelights featuring curvilinear glazing bars. There is a string course and a moulded and dentilled cornice. The garden front has five bays with side wings of two bays each, featuring a hexastyle portico. The listing also includes a 1879 extension that has a three-storey tower built for Miles McInnes, as well as a single-storey, four-bay extension of brick facing the garden, which has niches between the sash windows. The interior was restored in 1982 and includes moulded plaster ceilings, carved and moulded marble fireplaces, and panelled doors. The building was constructed around and encases an earlier brick house from the early or mid-18th century, which was discovered during restoration.
