Description

Embo House, built around 1790, is a symmetrical classical building featuring a central block that rises three storeys over a raised basement and consists of five bays. It is flanked by two-storey, three-bay dwellings that are connected to the main house by single-storey bays, each featuring a large round-headed window with a dummy fanlight and a Gibbs surround. The exterior is harled with yellow ashlar sandstone dressings.

The main house has a pedimented centre bay with a central door that is accessed by a flight of steps. It also features a round-headed, key-stoned window on the second floor and an apex chimney. The ground floor has chamfered ashlar quoins and a deep lintel course that links the ground floor windows. The upper floor has smaller windows with nine-pane glazing, while the other windows have twelve panes. There is an eaves band and a deep moulded eaves cornice, along with moulded sides to the skews and ashlar end stacks. The outer wings each have three long windows on the south elevation and three smaller windows on the upper floor, all glazed similarly to those in the main house. They also have matching margins, an eaves band, and plain skews, with margined end stacks. The entire building is topped with slate roofs.

The rear of the house features symmetrical fenestration, but there is a modern single-storey extension at the back of the central block. Three original lead rainwater heads and pipes remain, with the heads being fluted and adorned with egg and dart decorative detailing.

Inside, the entrance hall boasts an ornamental plaster ceiling, while the ground floor rooms have simple decorative cornices. There are original wooden chimney pieces in the ground floor rooms flanking the entrance hall, as well as in the former drawing room in the east wing, although these now have simple modern gates. The original staircase features turned wooden balusters. A large segmental-headed fireplace in the former kitchen contains a wall oven or aumbry, but the hearth is now closed.
