Description
Spring Grove is a large two-storey and basement house built in 1840, featuring five bays with canted outer bays. The front is constructed of sandstone ashlar, while the sides and rear are made of rubble, with ashlar dressings. The roof is piended and platformed, covered in grey slate. Architectural details include a band course at the ground floor, a corniced first floor, and a corniced blocking course. The building has margined angles, two corniced and linked rectangular wallhead stacks on the side elevations, and a corniced ridge stack. The windows on the ground floor front have lugged architraves and cornices, while those on the first floor are architraved and aproned, featuring 12-pane timber sash and case glazing.
The front elevation has a central door with a fanlight, accessed by balustraded steps that oversail the basement. An open porch with Ionic columns and angle piers is located at the entrance, flanked by windows on either side. The first floor contains three windows, and the canted outer bays have three windows on each floor.
On the rear elevation, the end bays are advanced, with a three-window bay to the right and a flat bay to the left. A second-floor window has been altered to a bipartite design, and a central door has been changed to a window at the ground level. There is a large tripartite stair window with a consoled cornice on the first floor, while the other windows are plain. A cast-iron wall drinking fountain by Kennedy of Kilmarnock is also present.
Inside, there are some original chimneypieces and cornices, with particularly fine plasterwork in the ground floor east room. The interior features panelled shutters and a scale and platt staircase with decorative cast-iron balusters.
The property is approached by double steps leading to the front porch, which has ashlar balusters and cast-iron lamp bases at the angle dies. The low coped masonry boundary walls include two angle piers, metal railings, and gates, with rubble-built boundary walls to the south and west of the steps.
