Description
162 Nethergate in Dundee is a classical style villa built around 1790. It is a two-storey building with a basement and features five bays. The front is made of sandstone ashlar, while the basement, sides, and rear are constructed from rubble, with ashlar dressings. The roof is a piended grey slate. Notable architectural details include a band course at the ground floor, an eaves course, and margined angles. The windows are margined, with some original 12-pane sash and case glazing remaining at the rear, and various styles including 2-pane and 4-pane windows elsewhere. There are box dormers on the east and rear sides, and one corniced and one coped stack with uniformly designed cream cans extending from the ridge into the south pitch of the roof.
The front elevation features a centre bay that is advanced and pedimented, with a blinded oculus in the tympanum. The central door has a round-arched, tripartite doorcase and is approached by steps that oversail the basement. There is one window on the first floor and two windows on the left and right at each floor.
The rear elevation has a three-bay bow at the centre with a semi-conical roof. It includes a door flanked by windows on the basement and ground floor, and three windows on the first floor, with additional windows on the left and right at each floor, along with three dormers.
Inside, the hall and stair were replastered around 1835-40 and feature coffered ceilings and cast-iron balusters. Most rooms have good corniced and chimneypieces dating from around 1790.
The property is enclosed by boundary walls, railings, and steps. There is a tall rubble-built former sea wall to the south. The front elevation has ashlar steps and piers with steel railings in the style of Mills and Shepherd, which were installed around 1927.
