Description

164 Nethergate in Dundee is a villa designed by Samuel Bell, dating from around 1785. It is a two-storey building with a basement and features three bays. The front is constructed of squared cherry-cocked sandstone rubble, while the sides and rear are made of random rubble, with ashlar dressings and a grey slate roof. The front has a band course at the ground floor, an eaves course, and rusticated quoins. The windows are margined, primarily consisting of two-pane timber sash and case glazing, with ashlar-coped skews and skewblocks. The gable stacks are coped, but the cans have been removed.

On the front elevation, the central door is framed by a keystoned Venetian doorpiece and is accessed by steps that oversail the basement. There are windows on either side of the door, and three windows on the first floor, with a later small window added to the left of the central window.

The rear elevation is four bays wide and features an addition to the basement that is out of character with the original design. There are four windows on both the ground and first floors, as well as two piended dormers and one box dormer, which have modern glazing that is also out of character.

The east gable has a harled ground floor extension and a slate-hung first floor passage that is glazed to the south, connecting to No 162 Nethergate.

Inside, the villa has curved cast-iron balusters, simple original plaster cornices, and a more elaborate Victorian cornice in the main ground floor room. The first floor has been partitioned, and the basement floor has been extended.

The boundary walls and railings include a rubble-built former sea wall to the south and stugged ashlar boundary walls along Nethergate, topped with steel railings. There are twin square-section ashlar gatepiers adorned with fine wrought-iron work above.
