Description

145 Nethergate in Dundee is a former church hall and school building designed by David Mackenzie in 1834, with a two-storey extension added in 1843-1844. The structure is built on sloping ground and features a two-storey, four-bay layout. It is constructed from stugged and snecked rubble sandstone with ashlar dressings, much of which has been recast with cement. The roof is covered with grey slate and is piended to the east.

Notable exterior features include a band course at the first floor level and a wallhead course. The windows are margined, primarily consisting of four-pane timber sash and case glazing. The eastern gable has a replacement ashlar-coped skew and a corniced gable stack located at the mid-pitch of the rear. Additionally, there is a large timber-louvred ridge ventilator topped with a slate pyramidal roof and a decorative cast-iron finial.

On the front (south) elevation, there is a door in the fourth bay to the right, featuring a fanlight and a corniced, pilastered doorpiece. To the left of the door is a narrow two-pane window, with three windows located to the far left and four windows on the first floor. The ground floor has a bipartite window to the right, with a corresponding bipartite stair window above that includes eight-pane segmental-headed lights.

The east gable includes a door with a fanlight to the right and a window to the left, both having corbelled and shallowly pointed heads, along with two windows on the first floor. The rear elevation has a door to the right, three windows and one blocked window to the left, and three windows on the first floor, with a rendered bay to the far left and a later recessed bay to the outer left.

The interior has not been seen.
