Description

The former Gaelic Church at 5, 7, and 9 Albert Square in Dundee was designed by David Mackenzie in 1868. This three-storey building with an attic features six bays and has been converted for commercial use. It is constructed of pinkish sandstone ashlar with snecked rubble on the sides and rear, topped with a slate roof. The ground floor has a band course, while the first and second floors feature cill courses. A bracketed cornice and parapet with dies adorn the top, and the outer bays have channelled angles at the ground level and rusticated quoins on the upper floors.

The front elevation shows slightly advanced outer bays with consoled and corniced doorpieces, although one door has been blocked for a banking machine. The central bays contain four windows, while the upper floors have six windows.

On the left return elevation facing Chapel Street, there is a central door with a keystoned round-headed doorcase and a fanlight, framed by a pilastered and pedimented doorpiece. To the left and right of this door are 9-pane top-hopper windows flanked by smaller windows. The first floor features a round-headed window set in a large recessed panel, with 9-pane windows on either side. The second floor has a tripartite round-headed window with aprons and border glazing, again flanked by 9-pane windows. The attic contains two keystoned segmental windows.

The rear elevation includes two doors and windows on the ground floor, with another door and window blocked. The upper floors have six segmental windows, with eight panes on the first floor and six panes on the second floor. The interior has not been seen.
