Description

South Leith Baptist Church, built between 1893 and 1894, is a two-storey, three-bay rectangular church located at 17 Kirk Street in Leith, Edinburgh. It features a taller ground floor and plain Renaissance details, with a single-storey bay on the northeast side. The church is constructed from cream sandstone, squared and snecked rubble with polished dressings on the front and northwest elevation, while the rear is made of coursed rubble. It has a base course, a badly weathered cavetto eaves cornice, and round-arched windows, except for those on the ground floor of the front elevation, which are pilastered and corniced with a cill course and panelled aprons.

On the southwest elevation facing Casselbank Street, there is a tall round-arched keystoned doorway at the centre, framed by pilasters with a consoled pediment, featuring a replacement door and a semi-circular radial fanlight, along with a decorative iron bracket. Flanking this doorway are two tall windows, with four smaller windows located on the first floor. A stepped wallhead tablet is present but now rendered over.

The northwest elevation on Kirk Street is four bays wide, with a secondary architraved and corniced doorway on the outer right, which has a panelled door and rectangular fanlight above. There is a single window at the first floor above this doorway. The remaining bays have tall windows with round-arched border glazing on the ground floor and smaller windows on the first floor. A truncated wallhead stack is located at the centre, and there is a single-storey bay on the outer left with a rectangular window.

The northeast rear elevation features a single-storey flat-roofed projection at the ground floor, with two single windows at the first floor to the left and a slender corniced wallhead stack to the right.

The church has timber sash and case windows with plate glass glazing. The roof is a combination of piend and platform slate with metal flashings, and there are two wallhead stacks.

Inside, as of 1992, the church has a plain three-bay interior with depressed arches over cast-iron columns that have gilded acanthus capitals. The walls are adorned with embossed Art Nouveau-type wallpapering. The floor is raked with original timber pews and timber dado panelling. The ceiling is compartmentalized with egg and dart cornices, and the front room features fluted fireplaces and ornate cornices, along with remnants of a floral frieze.
