44, 42B Kirk Street, Leith, Edinburgh

This pair of semi-detached houses, located at 44 and 42B Kirk Street in Leith, Edinburgh, dates back to the earlier 19th century. They are designed with three bays and consist of two storeys, an attic, and a basement. The exterior features cream sandstone, with coursed and squared rubble at the basement level, droved ashlar with tooled dressings above, and squared and snecked rubble on the rear and sides.

The front elevation is symmetrical, with pilastered and corniced doorways leading to the central bays, accessed by steps. Above these doorways, there are single windows, and the remaining bays also feature single windows. Each house has two rectangular tripartite dormers that are slate-hung and have half-piended roofs.

The rear elevation is three storeys high and includes two secondary doorways along with irregularly placed windows. The northeast elevation has a gabled design with an apex stack and a single window, while the southwest elevation mirrors this with a similar gable and features iron balcony brackets on the right window.

The windows are timber sash and case with plate glass glazing, and the dormers have small pane windows, although some modern replacement windows are present. The roof is covered with slate and includes metal flashings. The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1993.
