Description

1-6 Ardwell Place is a pair of houses built in the earlier 19th century. They are two stories tall and have a symmetrical five-bay rectangular layout. The exterior is made of rubble with red sandstone ashlar margins and dressings, featuring quoin strips and stop-chamfered reveals. The houses have gabled bipartite dormerheads and projecting eaves with a timber eaves cornice.

The west elevation has five bays, with the outer left and right bays containing bipartite windows that are symmetrically placed on each floor, with dormerheads above. The three central bays are grouped under a gable that breaks the eaves. There is a window at the center on the ground floor, a blind window on the first floor, and a blind round-headed window in the gablehead. Each house has a door to the right and left of the center bay, featuring plain architraves with an entablature and a four-panelled door with a rectangular plate glass fanlight (the door to the right is modern). The first floor windows are symmetrically placed.

The east elevation has five asymmetrical bays and includes a modern flat-roofed concrete extension at the center, with an iron forestair leading to the first floor. The windows feature five-pane glazing, with plate glass windows in the right dormerhead and some replacement windows at the rear. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a broad, rendered and coped ridge stack, with a flue and breast projecting at the right gable.
