Description

The Methodist Church at 15 Ward Road in Dundee was designed by David Mackenzie in 1866, with an organ chamber added between 1883 and 1884. This simple Gothic church features three bays with aisles and a six-bay nave, along with basement halls. The exterior is made of painted rubble with painted ashlar dressings and has a grey slate roof. The front elevation includes finialled buttresses, a string course at the basement level, and a prominent 5-light geometric-traceried gallery window with a hoodmould and mask label stops. The aisles have 2-light pointed windows with continuous hoodmoulds, while the nave features paired lancets and shoulder-headed windows in the basement. The skews are ashlar-coped with cross-finials at the front and a coped stack at the rear, along with three truncated ridge ventilators.

The front elevation showcases a two-leaf boarded door with decorative hinges and a pointed boarded overdoor, framed by nook shafts and a moulded arch with a hoodmould and mask label stops. This door is accessed by double lateral stairs that have Gothic and spear-pattern cast-iron railings and a lamp standard (though the lantern is missing). A modern canopy covers the platform at the door, with additional windows in the basement and flanking aisles, and the gallery window above.

On the aisle elevation facing Rattray Street, there is a basement door to the left, with basement bay windows on the right and railings between the buttresses, featuring six paired windows on the main floor.

The rear elevation has a piend-roofed outshot at the center with a later stair, flanked by two lancet windows and a bullseye window above.

The interior has not been seen. To the left of the front elevation, there are two-storey offices that are slightly advanced. These offices feature a door and a 2-light trefoil-headed window on the ground floor with a continuous hoodmould, and an angle at the right that is corbelled to a splayed angle with a single window on the first floor, along with a three-light window to the left set in a recessed panel, topped with a platform roof.
