Description
Ward Congregational Church, located at 8 Constitution Road in Dundee, was designed by James Brewster in 1833, with the apse and schoolrooms added by Charles Edward around 1848. This rectangular-plan, simple Gothic church features single-storey schoolrooms flanking the apse. The front is made of painted ashlar, while the sides and rear are constructed from stugged sandstone rubble, with ashlar dressings and a slate roof.
The front elevation is gabled and treated as the nave with aisles. It has a full-height, four-light, traceried pointed-arch window at the center, complete with a moulded architrave and hoodmould featuring mask label stops. This window is flanked by paired buttresses topped with crocketted pinnacles. Narrow gablet sections between the buttresses contain blind slit windows with crocketted ogee hoodmoulds. The aisles on either side have diagonal buttresses and feature four-centre arch doorways with moulded doorcases and square hoodmoulds, with paired lancets above. The coped parapet is adorned with a foliate finial at the apex.
The side elevations include three Y-traceried pointed windows and a single-storey entrance porch. The rear elevation, facing Nicoll Street, showcases a full-height canted apse at the center, with a tripartite shoulder-arched window featuring a pointed-arch panel and hoodmould on the ground floor. Y-traceried windows are present on the left and right returns, as well as at the gable, which is masked by the schoolrooms. The schoolrooms themselves have shoulder-arched windows and doors, along with piended roofs.
Inside, there is a horseshoe gallery supported by iron pillars, and a timber panelled screen that was screw-mounted in 1880 by the organ. The gallery encircles a rooflight installed in 1876, with coloured glass added in 1880 and 1901. The hall below the organ is simple in design.
