Description

1A West Bell Street and 16 Constitution Road in Dundee is a former church designed by James Black in 1840. This classical building is two stories tall with a basement and features five bays, situated on a sloping corner site. The exterior is constructed of sandstone ashlar, with a stugged finish on the basement, rusticated ground floor, polished first floor, and rubble at the rear, topped with a concealed roof. There is a band course between the ground and first floors, and the first floor is pilastered with a corniced frieze. The corniced parapet has shallow-pedimented stepped panels in the center and a balustrade on the outer bays. The windows are timber cross types with ventilators at the transom and leaded glazing, with architraves on the first floor and cill bands over blind panels.

On the West Bell Street elevation, there is a two-leaf panelled door with an astragalled fanlight, accessed by steps that oversail the basement, leading to each slightly advanced outer bay. The first floor has one window, while the ground floor features three windows in the three central bays, along with various openings in the basement.

The Constitution Road elevation has various openings in the basement and three windows on the first and second floors in the three central bays. Each slightly advanced outer bay has a window in a recessed round-headed panel on the ground floor and a window on the first floor. There is also a lower recessed modern addition to the left.

The property includes two sets of cast-iron gatepiers on the Ward Road elevation and one pier on Constitution Road, with spear-headed railings on both elevations.

Inside, there is a fine plaster ceiling, although the pews have been removed, and trussed compound floor beams are present over the basement hall.
