Description

Dundee High School For Girls, built in 1889 by James G Fairley, is a large, two-storey building with an attic and basement, situated on a sloping site at a corner location. It is designed in a French Renaissance style. The exterior is constructed of pinkish sandstone ashlar, with sections channelled at the basement and banded at ground floor level. The roof is slate and lead, featuring a Mansard form. Architectural detailing includes a base course, cill courses, a corniced entablature to the ground floor, wallhead friezes, corniced parapets, and pediments. Most windows are tripartite, with square heads on the ground floor and keystoned, round heads on the first floor, featuring architraves, a continuous corbelled cill course, colonette mullions with festooned Ionic capitals and continuous rooflights to the attic. The corner pavilions incorporate balustraded Venetian windows, and the building's angles are topped with flattened pyramidal roofs containing oculi, antefixaed cornices, and squat spirelets; the centre of the Euclid Crescent elevation has a flattened, ogival roof.

The Euclid Crescent elevation is five bays wide, with the central and outer bays slightly projecting. A prominent doorpiece centres the elevation, featuring Doric columns (fluted at the top) in antis, an entablature, and a segmental pediment with an allegorical relief carving within the tympanum. The double-leaf panelled door has pilastered margins, a mask-keystoned round-headed fanlight, festooned spandrels, and is flanked by sidelights with panels above, all behind original wrought iron screens. A pilastered tripartite window sits above the doorpiece on the first floor, featuring a bipartite window within a round-headed panel, flanked by sidelights with sculpted urn panels. A scrolled, broken pediment tops the main cornice, rising to a pair of aediculaed dormers. Tripartite windows are located to the left and right on the ground floor, flanked by recessed floriate panels, with round-headed tripartite windows above them on the first floor. Pilastered tripartite and Venetian windows are situated in the outer ground and second floor bays, respectively, each with pediments featuring allegorical tympanum reliefs.

The Euclid Street elevation is similar to the Euclid Crescent elevation, but includes basement windows and paired bipartites to the central bay, which is pedimented with a sculpted figure at its apex.

The interior features a fine, marble-columned entrance hall with decorative plasterwork entablatures, arches, and cornices, set against a mosaic floor. A well staircase has decorative cast-iron panel balusters and timber newels. Three stained glass windows, depicting figures representing art, literature, and science in pilastered, round-headed architraves, are located on the staircase. Throughout the interior are panelled and boarded dados and compartmentalised ceilings. Original double doors lead to the attic music studios.
