Description
The Baptist Church on Ward Road in Dundee was designed by Thomas M Cappon in 1895. This galleried Gothic church features a basement hall and is constructed with squared and snecked red sandstone rubble at the front, accented with ashlar dressings, while the sides and rear are made of red brick. The roof is covered with green slate and has terracotta ridge tiles, topped with an octagonal louvred fleche ventilator.
The front elevation showcases a central gabled bay that is advanced, featuring a 6-light hoodmoulded basement window. Above this, there is a large two-storey 6-light canted oriel with three crocket-finialled gablets, and louvred stepped lancets at the apex topped with a cross finial. To the left, there is a pointed-arch entrance set in a crenellated porch, accompanied by a set-back single-light window and a 3-light geometric-traceried window above. The bay to the right is set back as well, containing a door and side window within a large pointed-arch hoodmould, with quatrefoil tracery in the tympanum and a similar geometric-traceried window above.
The side elevations include piend-roofed bays at the northernmost end, which are advanced for stairs. The church has two-storey, three-bay buttressed flanks adorned with pointed-arch traceried windows, gabletted at the first floor that pierce the eaves. The rear features a canted apsidal shape with two pointed-arch windows, where the tracery has been altered to accommodate stained glass windows. There is also a modern dry-dashed extension.
Inside, the church boasts a braced collar beam roof with traceried spandrels supported by cast-iron columns. The galleried aisles and rear maintain original dark woodwork and a clock, with later extensions made to support an organ over the altar and baptistry, which have been remodelled with lighter woodwork. A marble font is present, designed for total immersion. Additionally, there are two stained glass war memorial windows, while cathedral glass is used elsewhere. The hall features painted murals depicting biblical scenes.
