Description

The building is a gymnasium located at 14 Ward Road in Dundee, designed by Alexander McCulloch and George Jamieson in 1890. It was reconstructed in 1926 after a fire in 1921. The gymnasium is a two-storey, five-bay structure that features a symmetrical and classically detailed design, constructed from cream sandstone ashlar. It has a base course, cill courses on both the ground and first floors, a band course over the ground floor lintel, and an eaves course. The central and outer bays are slightly advanced.

On the principal north elevation, there is a two-leaf panelled door at the center, which is topped by a round-headed leaded fanlight and framed by a pilastered tripartite doorpiece. It includes round-headed sidelights with small rectangular lights above. Above this, there is a segmental pediment with relief sculpture in the tympanum, and a large tripartite window. The recessed bays feature tripartite windows, with rounded-headed designs on the first floor. The outer bays have bipartite windows on both the ground and first floors. The outer lights of the first floor center tripartite window are keystoned and moulded at the top, while the flanking tripartites are also keystoned and round-headed, with the outer bays featuring keystoned round-headed tripartites.

The ground floor windows have 6-pane timber glazing with single top-hoppers, while the first floor has a 6-pane top-hopper and a 12-pane center window. The roof is slate, with ashlar-coped skews and skewblocks, and a brick-coped end stack to the left. The building also features cast-iron rainwater goods.

The interior was completely destroyed in the 1921 fire, and the 1926 reconstruction includes a twin stair leading to the main entrance hall and simple timber panelling.
