Description
This is a three-storey and attic tenemental building dated 1864, designed by David Mackenzie, situated on a three-sided corner site in Dundee. Number 4 Nicoll Street is slightly earlier in date. The building is constructed from cream sandstone, with ashlar dressings, and pinkish snecked rubble to the sides and rear, all topped with a piended platform slate roof. A base course and cill and lintel course mark the second floor. The windows are single, bi-, and tripartite, with the outer angle bays bowed. The ground floor window jambs are chamfered, the first floor windows have continuous hoodmoulds, and the second floor windows feature stop-chamfered details. Cast-iron windows guards are present at the consoled cills to the first and second floors of the second and third bays from the left and right. The windows originally featured 2-pane timber sash and case glazing, with 4-pane windows on the Rattray and Nicoll Street elevations (with a 4-over-1 configuration at 1 Rattray Street), and 8-pane windows to the rear. Piended dormers are present in the attic, with modern, out-of-character window frames. Corniced and shouldered wallhead stacks are present, cut down at Rattray Street, and the wallhead gables feature windows, stacks, and ashlar-coped skews to the rear. Cast-iron rainwater goods are also a feature.
The front elevation has five bays at the centre, with a splayed, round-headed doorcase (now blocked as a window) and a hoodmould in the centre bay. Single and bipartite windows are located to the left and right respectively. The first and second floors feature single and three-bipartite windows. Three bays are slightly advanced with bowed outer angle bays, featuring a door and tripartite window to the left and a similar arrangement to the right, except with a single window instead of a door. Six dormers are visible.
The Rattray Street elevation features a central door flanked by single windows, with two windows on the first and second floors, the right-hand windows being blocked.
The rear elevation exhibits various doors and windows and includes two wallhead gables.
The Nicoll Street elevation has a left-hand door with a splayed doorcase and stepped hoodmould, incorporating a date panel. To the right, there is a single, bipartite, and single window. The first floor features two single windows, a bipartite window, and a single window. On the second floor, there are two single windows, a tripartite window, and a single window. A wallhead stack with a bipartite window is also present, along with two dormers.
Number 4 Nicoll Street, located to the right, has a door flanked by sidelights, two stair windows above, single windows to the left, two single windows to the first and second floors, and a wallhead stack. The interior of the building has not been inspected.
