Description

The Baptist Church on Rattray Street in Dundee was designed by Alexander McCulloch and completed in 1878. This former church features a rectangular plan and an aisleless layout, showcasing a Gothic facade. The front is constructed with painted stugged coursers, while the sides and rear are made of rubble, complemented by ashlar dressings and a grey slate roof.

The front elevation has a base course and a stepped cill course leading to the first floor. It is flanked by buttresses on either side of a wide central bay, which is topped with large octagonal finials and spirelets. The buttresses at the corners feature pyramidal-capped square-section finials. The first floor includes three-light pointed-arch windows, lancets, square-headed windows, and oculi, with cusped three-light lancets on the sides. The ashlar-coped skews at the front are finished with a finial.

The central entrance features two leaf doors that are partly diagonally boarded, set within a moulded pointed-arch doorcase with nookshafts that have stiff-leaf capitals. Above the doors is a hoodmould and a fanlight with a trefoil, flanked by two oculi that are intertwined with a sculpted vine motif. This is all framed by a slightly advanced doorpiece topped with a gablet over the parapet, which is flanked by single lancets. The first floor has a large pointed-arch panel with a tall cusped lancet in the center, flanked by buttresses and three-light windows with a rose window above. There are staircase bays on both the left and right, each featuring a bipartite window with a lancet and an oculus. A name panel is located over the bipartite window on the left, while a date panel is on the right.

On the left return elevation, there are three three-light lancets. The right return elevation features five three-light lancets.

Inside, the ground floor has a hall, while the church area above includes a collar roof and a panelled chancel area with an organ gallery and a marble baptismal pool. Various wall-mounted memorials are also present.
