Description

1 Tay Square in Dundee is a three-storey and attic tenement block, built in the early 19th century by David Neave. It features five bays and is situated on a corner site. The front is constructed from cherry-cocked coursed and squared sandstone, while the sides and rear are made of rubble, with ashlar dressings and a grey slate roof. Architectural details include a base course, a band course above the ground floor at the front, a cill band on the second floor, an eaves course, and rusticated quoins that are painted on the front. The windows have margins, with timber 12-pane sash and case frames on the first floor and 2-pane frames on the second. There are later piended dormers, ashlar-coped skews with skew blocks, a cut-down shouldered wallhead stack on the front elevation, a brick end stack on the left return gable, and a cut-down stack on the Tay Square gable.

On the South Tay Street elevation, the ground floor is harled and altered, likely in the later 19th century. There is a corniced paired doorpiece to the centre left, with the right-hand doorpiece featuring pilasters and sidelights, which may have originally formed a tripartite arrangement. To the left, there are bipartite windows, and to the far right, another pilastered and corniced doorpiece is flanked by three single windows on the left and one on the right. The first and second floors each have five windows, with a wallhead stack at the centre and two dormers, along with modern rooflights.

The Tay Square elevation includes a door and two multi-pane windows on the ground floor to the right, with four windows on both the first and second floors and paired small windows in the attic.

The rear elevation features a cement-rendered canted stair tower at the centre, which has single-light windows and a piended roof. There are various doors and windows on the ground floor, with two windows on the upper floors on either side of the stair tower, along with two dormers.

The interior has not been seen.
