Description
1 Tay Street Lane in Dundee is a later 19th-century, four-storey commercial and tenement block located on a corner site with Tay Street Lane. The building features sandstone ashlar on the upper floors of the front elevation, while the side and rear are constructed of rubble, topped with a grey slate roof. The ground floor has a cornice, although it is partially obscured by a modern shopfront on the right. Architectural details include a cill band at the first floor, a lintel band and continuous cornice at the second floor, and a lintel and cill band at the third floor. The building is capped with a corniced open-work parapet that has dies, and a pilaster strip is located at the center. The front elevation has single, bi- and tripartite architraved windows, with the first-floor windows corniced and the second-floor windows featuring moulded cills. The windows are 2-pane timber sash and case with smaller sashes on top, and there is a window at the splayed angle and the first bay on the left treated as bipartite with pilastered architraves on the first and second floors. The side elevation has single 4-pane sash and case windows. The building also has corniced ridge and wallhead stacks.
The front elevation is four bays wide, with a public house front on the left and a left return that is partly original and has been restored in a sympathetic style. There is a door at the left splayed angle and a modern shopfront on the right that is out of character with the rest of the building. The upper floors have windows arranged in a pattern of 2-2-1-3.
On the side elevation facing Tay Street Lane, there is a keystoned and pilastered round-headed pend entrance to the left, flanked by a window on the left and a door on the right. The upper floors feature two widely spaced windows. To the right, there is a bay with a door on the ground floor and a window on each upper floor, along with a public house front at the far right that has three single windows above. The left return gable is blank.
The interior has not been seen.
