Miln's Buildings, 140 Nethergate, 138, Dundee

Miln's Buildings, located at 146 and 148 Nethergate in Dundee, were designed by Samuel Bell for builder James Miln around 1790. This three-storey structure, which includes a basement and sub-basement, features a 19-bay flatted terrace inspired by the Edinburgh New Town model. The front is constructed of coursed rubble sandstone with some cherry-cocking, while the rear is made of random rubble, complemented by ashlar dressings and a slate roof. Notable architectural details include a band course at the ground floor, heavily rusticated quoins, doorpieces with Gibbs surrounds and tripartite keystones, ashlar-coped skews, and axial and wallhead stacks, some of which have been removed or partially rebuilt in brick. The windows are margined, with some original 12-pane timber sash and case glazing, while others have been replaced with 2-pane windows.

The front elevation is symmetrical, featuring a central 7-bay block connected to 5-bay outer blocks by recessed single bays, each with angle quoins. The basement has segmental-arched doors and small windows, while the ground floor center has paired doors. Single doors are located at the 4th, 6th, and 8th bays from both the left and right, each accessed by steps and a platt that oversails the basement, which has rubble voussoirs and plain metal railings. There are 12 windows on the ground floor and 19 on each upper floor, along with two later dormers and various rooflights.

The rear elevation consists of four storeys and a basement, arranged symmetrically with four bays on either side of two three-window bows. The third bay from each end is blind and terminates in a wallhead stack, which has been removed from the eastern end. The rear also features two later dormers and various rooflights.

The interior has not been seen, and there is a fragment of a former sea wall made of rubble located at the eastern end of the building.
