Description

134 Nethergate, 132, and 132A in Dundee is a four-storey and attic, four-bay Venetian-style tenement and commercial building designed by John Young and Andrew Meldrum in 1873. The ground floor features a cornice, while the first floor has a cill and lintel course, and the second floor includes a cill course and a main corbelled cornice adorned with a rosette frieze. The wallhead is corniced and supported by pilaster strips that flank the windows and rise from the main cornice. The building has channelled quoin strips that extend through all storeys and are topped with large urns.

The windows are two-pane timber sash and case types, with round-headed windows on the first floor featuring two-light circled tracery and sculpted spandrels. The second floor has paired round-headed windows with keystones, balustraded aprons, and consoled cornices. The third floor features lugged architraves, and there are segmental-pedimented dormers. The wallhead stacks are scroll-shouldered with panelled shafts and corbelled cornices, while the gable stacks are also corniced and the west side is cut down and harled.

The front elevation has altered shopfronts on the ground floor, with four windows on each upper floor and four dormers intersected by three wallhead stacks. The rear elevation has lower floors concealed by a piended M-roof hall and a central rectangular piend-roofed stair tower leading to the upper floors. This side features bipartite windows in the outer bays, various single windows, and four piended dormers, along with single windows on the left return gable.

The interior has not been fully seen, but the hall includes a coved plaster ceiling supported by decorative corbels.
